Veterans Affairs Second Floor Addition
SSRG stepped in to help when the VA needed to build a second floor on top of an existing one-story building. This project, which combined both retrofit and new construction, was a great way for SSRG to showcase their capabilities beyond heavy restoration.
The VA Cincinnati Healthcare System serves 42,100 veterans in a 15-county area in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, with their main location on Vine Street in Cincinnati.
The problem
Building on top of an existing building was an obstacle our team had to overcome. The original building was no longer completely level or precise in angles, which made the alignment of the second story challenging.
The fix
In order to get the second story to line up dimensionally and fit as perfectly as a puzzle piece, the SSRG team relied on different sized anchors and cut steel that was protruding. Despite the challenges, the team was ahead of schedule for the duration of the job. This second floor addition is completely explosion proof, where even the windows and heavy gauge metal framing is considered explosion proof.
The project required that the new and restored building elements match the historical elements of the existing building so that the historical nature of the building would not be compromised. The SSRG team worked with us very closely and was able to restore the building beatifically. SSRG experience in Historical Restoration was very evident in their attention to detail and sensitivity to the true nature of the building.
