Tennessee War Memorial Building

SSRG navigated confined spaces, fragile historic conditions, and numerous unknowns to complete this National Historic Landmark’s first major renovation in more than 50 years.

Originally built in 1925, the Tennessee War Memorial Building in downtown Nashville was in dire need of renovation. Powered by our hard-earned legacy of doing what it takes, our team of structural specialists led the effort with the innovative thinking and commitment to quality we’re known for. In addition to historic masonry restoration, we also completed structural steel modifications and stabilization to modernize the building while restoring key elements of its original architecture.

The scope of our structural steel work included:

  • Installation of more than 40,000 pounds of structural steel
  • Reopening an infilled light well
  • Stabilizing walls and infills for new concrete
  • Multiple stairways, including a custom grand staircase to match the auditorium’s existing one
  • Fabrication and installation of a custom catwalk above the auditorium featuring 700 linear feet of steel

Preserving history through innovation

Because the building was built nearly a century ago and had undergone multiple iterations of renovations, we entered the project knowing there was much we didn’t know. Discovery is a reality of historic preservation work—and thanks to our own long history and deep experience, we are skilled at navigating the unexpected. Much of the installation required heavy on-site modifications and creative problem solving to marry design intent with existing structures.

Access was also a complicating factor, as is common in old buildings, and we were required to transport much of our steel components through windows and a single 3-foot-by-5-foot panel. We were also required to install the new steel without “hot work”—the use of tools such as welders—which could have damaged the century-old plaster, original horse-hair insulation, and delicate mechanical system.

When a 10-week fabricator delay threatened the grand staircase installation, we re-engineered the process and assembled the stair on-site, piece by piece, in just four days. With our specialized expertise and signature no-fear approach, we restored this cherished monument to its former glory while preserving it for years to come.
