Employee Spotlight

SSRG would not be the company it is today without its incredible staff. Each month we highlight one member from our team with a Q&A session.

Patrick Hackathorn, Superintendent

employee spotlightWHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY?

I like the acronym “K.I.S.S.”, Keep It Simple Stupid. The little things matter to the ones nearest to you. Respect and care about people, care about your task at hand, go the extra mile, do what you say you are going to do, set achievable goals, etc. Don’t be a doormat but don’t be a locked door either. It’s the little things that give us a good or bad name and I want a good name. Not just for our company or my crew of coworkers, but for my family. At the end of the day it’s all about people and relationships. Coworkers, clients, friends, children, spouses, they are why we do what we do. Just CARE! It doesn’t get more simple than that.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF WORKING FOR SSRG?

I have always appreciated the element of family that has always been in our company. There’s always someone able and willing to help! There is no excuse to ever feel out on an island in the HGC Group of Companies.

ACROSS YOUR CAREER, WHAT HAS CHANGED THE MOST IN THE INDUSTRY?

Technology! Masonry is archaic by default, but just the way the invention of the cell/smart phone has changed the way business gets done has been incredible. I remember the boss sending me to a payphone to call and see why a delivery wasn’t on site yet. Having to carry marked up maps of Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana to find my way in to work. Everything is a button away it seems today. It has certainly taken away many old excuses why business can’t get accomplished.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO ON YOUR DAYS OFF?

Spend time with my family. Every moment away from work is family time. From sports, trips to the park, school events, church, visits to grandparents houses, etc. I always enjoy spending time with my “crew”. 🙂

WHAT WOULD YOU DO FOR A CAREER IF I WEREN’T DOING THIS?

While I wouldn’t consider it just a career, I have always wanted to be a senior pastor if the doors ever open for me to do so. Even if I were to pastor alongside working here, I love helping people!

TELL US SOMETHING THAT SURPRISE US ABOUT  YOU.

I think one of the most surprising things about me is that 3 of my 6 children have a very rare type of dwarfism called Brachyolmia. There are less than 30 known cases diagnosed in the world and it was only with my children that doctors have been able to find a hereditary link with the condition. We are working hard with many of the best doctors in the country to help find more answers to a condition that little is known about and hopefully help many people in the process.

WHAT ADVISE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEW HIRE?

You don’t need to “fake it ’til you make it” here. There are so many opportunities to learn, progress, and grow both financially and in knowledge in our company that there is no reason to pretend you are something that you are not. Just come in, work hard, and take advantage of all the learning opportunities that we have here and you will be successful in the trades. Being faithful to do the little things will lead to big things. The ball is literally in your court at HGC Group of Companies.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

Again, I have to go back to my family. While I have been a part of many eye-opening projects over the years and have done, in my opinion, some very nice work, it all pales to the amazement that I have at the strength of my wife and children. With all they go through with their conditions and putting up with crazy, scatter brained dad, they never complain, they genuinely love people, and they always have smiles on their faces. They never cease to amaze me. 🙂
